Brand new cars at used car prices, as dealers push to meet registration targets

Practically brand new 70-plate cars are already on sale at used car prices as dealers strive to meet registration targets, says the online car supermarket BuyaCar.co.uk.

While new car targets are never easy for dealers, this year’s market has been especially tough as Covid-19 restrictions bit hard into new car sales in particular.

But it’s good news for car buyers, because it’s already possible to have a brand new 70-plate car in the new registration month – and save thousands.

BuyaCar.co.uk forecast several weeks ago that even as a used car specialist it expected to be able to offer 70-plate cars as early as September, thanks to unprecedentedly tough conditions for manufacturers and their dealers this year. And by the middle of the month brand new cars began to appear as used cars.

Each September dealers are presented with targets by manufacturers to register enough cars to qualify for bonuses which often form a big part of their annual profit. It means dealers are then able to offer huge discounts on brand new cars, sold as secondhand because the dealer is registered as first keeper.

Savings ranging from £6,072 to £29,910 are already available on the 10 models with the biggest savings – with a week of September still to go. These represent savings of between 28.6% and 41.3%.

Pain for the new car industry in 2020, which has suffered the biggest fall in sales for decades, is good news for motorists who love to sport the very latest plate, as this year they get the bonus of making big savings.

“Dealers always offer discounts on new cars that have been registered to meet targets and run by staff or used as demonstrators, but this year discounts are appearing in substantial numbers especially early,” said Christofer Lloyd, editor of BuyaCar.co.uk.

“We are offering some remarkable savings on the new price and some of these cars have as little as five or 10 miles on the clock with savings of almost a third.

“But it isn’t just the big savings that will appeal to drivers. These cars are available to buy immediately, when in most cases a new car has to be ordered before it is built. That can sometimes mean waiting several months to get behind the wheel, even if you have been able to negotiate a discount at all.

“And, of course, for the price of a secondhand vehicle you are getting the full manufacturer warranty as well as the magic of that brand new car smell.”
