Fleet industry recognised for driving EV demand

BVRLA members and guests will be joined by Transport Secretary Grant Shapps at the association’s Fleets in Charge event next month, as he recognises the important role that the vehicle rental, leasing and fleet sectors play in delivering the UK’s zero-emission goals.

In 2019, BVRLA members collectively bought around 80% of all battery electric vehicles sold in the UK, had over 5 million vehicles on fleet and put 1.5 million nearly new vehicles into the used vehicle market, making the industry a leading driver of putting cleaner vehicles on the road.

BVRLA Chief Executive Gerry Keaney marked World EV today by confirming the Secretary of State’s attendance at the association’s first Fleets in Charge digital event, saying:

“The Government recognises the vital role that our industry plays in driving road transport decarbonisation and I am delighted to announce that the Transport Secretary of State will be making an address at our event on 6 October.

“With 2021 due to see the implementation of Clean Air Zones across several UK towns and cities, more people will be looking for cleaner vehicles and our members stand ready to meet the needs of those personal and business customers looking for affordable, flexible and cleaner vehicles.”

The BVRLA 2019 Sustainability Credentials show that vehicle rental and leasing companies are already leading the transition to cleaner transport, with 100% of the car rental fleet and 96% of leased cars being Clean Air Zone-compliant, compared to an average of only 62% for all UK cars.

Keaney also welcomed today’s Government announcement pledging a £12 million fund for electric vehicle research projects, plans for more charge points at popular destinations and additional funding for local authorities to encourage businesses to switch to electric vans:

“The BVRLA and its members are working more closely than ever with policymakers to help them understand the fleet market and the policy interventions that will be needed to drive rapid decarbonisation of road transport. We will be using our Fleets in Charge event to launch our latest Road to Zero Report Card and we will also be unveiling our new Plug-in Pledge, which will demonstrate the huge contribution that the fleet sector will make between now and 2025 .”
