Ford Fiesta named most popular car of 2019

The Ford Fiesta was the pick of the cars with Motorpoint customers in 2019.

New figures from the UK’s leading independent car retailer, which has a network of branches throughout England, Scotland and Wales, revealed that the Ford Fiesta was the best-selling model of 2019, moving up one place on last year. It was closely followed by last year’s favourite, the Nissan Qashqai, and the BMW 1 Series. The BMW 3 Series and the Citroen C3, a new entry, rounded out of the Top Five.

However, there were a number of regional variations. In England and Wales, for instance, the top three selling models were the Ford Fiesta, Nissan Qashqai and BMW 1 Series while in Scotland it was the Nissan Qashqai, Ford Fiesta and the BMW 3 Series.  And, yet when it comes to London it was a completely different story, with Londoners preferring more premium models, with the BMW 3 Series, BMW 1 and Mercedes Benz C Class all featuring in the top five selling cars of 2019.

The ever increasing popularity of petrol cars continued in 2019 with petrol now accounting for almost two thirds of all sales, at 62.2 per cent (up 4.7 per cent on the previous year) compared with 37.8 per cent for diesels (down 4.7 per cent on the previous year).

And, when it came to choice of colour of car, Motorpoint customers last year preferred to play it safe with the firm favourite black, which accounted for 25.9 per cent of all cars, closely followed by white at 19.4, per cent, and then grey at 18.9 per cent. Blue, at 13.7 per cent and silver at 9.3 per cent rounded out the top five.

Mark Carpenter, Chief Executive Officer at Motorpoint, explained: “The Ford Fiesta continues to be perennially popular with Motorpoint customers thanks to its versatility, low running costs and great savings off list price and I wouldn’t be surprised to see if topping the charts this time next year based on demand already in 2020.

“ It also reflects the continuing overall trend among Motorpoint customers, as shown by the inclusion in our Top 10 of models such as the Citroen C3, Ford Focus, Fiat 500 and Renault Clio, towards smaller, more budget conscious and environmentally-friendly vehicles.”
