There is cause for cautious optimism as the HGV driver shortage appears to be improving. With the Government now finally working closely with the logistics & haulage industry there has been a much welcome increase in capacity for testing new drivers along with a commitment from the Government to improve facilities at truck stops across the UK. Smaller fleets are unfortunately still struggling to compete on the wages front with the larger fleet operators, as driver’s pay surged over the last 10 months the smaller operators struggled to both retain and attract new staff, the higher wages offered by the larger operators has on this front left a gap in fleet capacity. Times are still challenging but it would appear Christmas at least will not be cancelled this year.
