Two-thirds of van drivers miss Valentine’s Day and other family celebrations due to working after hours

Two-thirds of van drivers (69%)* have regularly missed important family events like wedding anniversaries, birthdays and Valentine’s Day because of their jobs, according to research by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles.

Birthdays topped the list of celebrations that van drivers had to postpone because of attending emergency call-outs or of making last minute deliveries, followed by anniversaries and children’s sports days.

Funerals, weddings, christenings and parents evenings were also missed out on by dedicated van drivers, while one tradesman even had to forego the birth of his child due to work.

The survey revealed women were more likely to miss spending time with family and friends due to work with 72% of women never clocking off compared to 68% of men.

Van drivers in the North East (83%) and London (82%) were most likely to put work commitments before loved ones while Scottish workers were the best at putting family first – with 45% of van drivers north of the border never missing a special occasion.

David Hanna, head of service and parts at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, said: “The stereotype is that people forget Valentine’s Day and have to make a late dash to the petrol station for flowers, but we know that sometimes missing out on the occasion is sometimes unavoidable. We are dedicated to Working With You and as industry experts, we appreciate that working long hours or at weekends often means missing out on special moments with friends and family.”
