Volkswagen celebrates successful summer sales restart ahead of 70-plate registration switchover

Volkswagen UK is gearing up for its customers to get behind the wheel of their new 70-plate cars, following the success of its dealers re-opening with social distancing and safety guidelines implemented in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Volkswagen maintains its long-standing position as one of the UK’s most popular car brands, with a 9.0% share of the UK market in July.* During the month, the Golf was the UK’s fourth best-selling car, while the Polo and Tiguan also featured among the top ten best-sellers, at seventh and ninth places respectively. All three are among the country’s top ten most popular cars across 2020 so far.

Across the same period, full-electric and plug-in hybrid cars jumped by 259.4% and 320.3% respectively, to take 4.7% and 4.3% of total registrations in the UK between 1 January and 31 July.* The e-Golf, e-up!, and the Passat GTE contributed to this, and with the arrival of the ground-breaking ID.3, sporty Golf GTE and the frugal Golf 1.0-litre eTSI mild-hybrid in the coming months, Volkswagen will have an increasing and diverse number of high quality, electrified offerings in key segments, in addition to the models already satisfying UK customers. On top of this, eagerly anticipated performance models like the Golf GTI and GTD are also expected to arrive in the near future on a 70-plate.

Volkswagen customers can still take advantage of the brand’s ‘Three Months On Us’ offer, where the brand will cover the first three months’ worth of payments on new car purchases. The offer is available across the whole range when a vehicle is purchased on Solutions Personal Contract Plan. This offer, which commenced in May, continues to be offered on cars ordered and collected before 30 September.

Patrick McGillycuddy, Head of Sales Operations at Volkswagen UK, said: “Our results since the lockdown hiatus are encouraging, and feedback on the new, socially-distanced way in which our Retailers now operate is really positive. We’re confident the stage has been set for continued success for the rest of the year, and into 2021.

“What’s particularly exciting is the swing towards pure-electric and electrified models across the UK market. With the country’s car-buying public hungrier than ever for ultra-low and zero-emissions models, Volkswagen is preparing to meet this growing appetite with more new plug-in hybrids on the way in the next few months, while the ID.3 is poised to provide the electric car market with a People’s Car.”
