City Transformer and the shape-shifting all-electric CT-1 make Mondial de l’Auto debut

The pioneering shape-shifting all-electric CT-1 from City Transformer represents the next chapter in sustainable and intelligent urban mobility.

Designed to meet the needs of the urban population with Paris being a prime mega city example, the CT-1 is a two-seat, four-wheeled, all-electric intelligent microcar.

With an advanced all-electric powertrain and an intelligent wheelbase that can transform its size on the road in real-time, the CT-1 uniquely allows commuters the opportunity to overcome the debilitating issues associated with congested inner-city life. This includes dramatically minimising congestion, reducing harmful pollutants, lessening noise pollution and transforming parking availability across urban areas. The CT-1 represents a new era in mobility without sacrificing key core attributes such as safety, comfort and the fun-to-drive factor.

Udi Meridor, City Transformer COO, said: “Paris is one of the world’s great metropolises. Like so many other cities around the world, Paris continues to evolve as a fantastic space that people call home. However, in recent years it’s been easy to lose sight of the fact that urban areas have been created for people first and people foremost.

“For example, the main arteries that are supposed to keep Paris moving are gridlocked. The roads and avenues closer to the city centre suffer from chronic congestion and resulting pollution. And most of this traffic chaos is the result of larger vehicles being on the road with just one single occupant inside the cabin. It’s time we re-think mobility. It’s time we free your city!

“The CT-1 is a sophisticated next-generation mobility solution for people living in congested urban areas such as Paris. The CT-1 is far easier to maintain on a day-to-day basis compared to conventional automobiles and represents a far safer solution compared to two-wheel applications.

“There is no doubt that congestion is an overriding issue for mega cities across the world. And this issue is getting more acute. Loss of time, loss of productivity, health problems, environmental damage – the list of negative effects of inner-city traffic chaos is overwhelming. But these challenges have helped to inspire the City Transformer team to develop a unique mobility solution specifically for the urban environment that makes daily transport leaner, cleaner and far more efficient.”

City Transformer and the revolutionary CT-1 shape shifter are located on Stand 650 in Hall 6 at Mondial de l’Auto 2022.

CT-1 – the shape-shifter transforms Paris
The CT-1 is the world’s first all-electric mobility solution that can intelligently adapt its dimensions and handling to the individual needs of the driver and the driving environment.

Like City Transformer, the pioneering CT-1 is making its Mondial de l’Auto debut.

The compact two-seater has been designed so that it can reduce its track width from 1.4 metres to one metre to allow it to manoeuvre into the smallest parking spaces across the urban environment. This unique wheelbase transformation also takes place on the road in real time to outsmart traffic and congestion flow.

The CT-1’s underpinnings are based on City Transformer’s in-house developed and highly advanced modular skateboard architecture that ensures the foldable microcar is a perfect fit for inner city life, where being behind the wheel of a vehicle is often a stressful, time-consuming, expensive and arduous experience.

Studies have shown that thanks to its innovative changing dimensions and overall compact package, CT-1 drivers will be 10 times more likely to find parking spots in urban areas. The optimal urban dimensions of the CT-1 will also ensure drivers spend less time behind the steering wheel and benefit from far cheaper everyday EV running costs.

The advanced architecture also ensures the CT-1 is an engaging drive that is fun and full of character.

Weighing just 590kg – including the battery pack which is 80% smaller in mass compared with most other standard EV batteries on the market today – the CT-1 offers an outstanding 180km real-world zero-emissions driving range.

The time it takes to do a weekly shop for the family – 30 minutes – is also the impressively short turnaround the CT-1 needs to re-charge its batteries from 10% to 80%.

When at 1.4-metres in width (in performance mode), the CT-1 has a top speed of 90km/h; when at a one-meter width (in city mode), speed is capped to 45km/h. The CT-1 measures 2,500mm in length and has an optimized wheelbase of 1,800mm.

Tests have shown that the all-electric microcar is much safer than scooters and e-bikes. As such, the CT-1 combines the advantages of a motorcycle with those of a car to create a unique overall mobility solution, without the inherent design-related disadvantages of more traditional polluting vehicles that currently make up the urban mobility landscape

Adapting to Parisian life
With the CT-1 development program entering the crucial final prototype test and assessment stages, final specifications of the innovative microcar are yet to be confirmed.

However, as part of its original design objective, City Transformer’s engineering team will ensure the CT-1 has a hugely reduced number of parts, components and subsystems compared with conventional vehicles. In terms of a direct comparison with an internal combustion vehicle (ICE) and an electric vehicle (EV), the CT-1 cuts the number of parts needed from around 25,000 (ICE) and 8,000 (EV) to just 1,500 (CT-1).

This makes the CT-1 incredibly reliable, durable and easy to live with for city dwellers and workers alike. It also dramatically reduces the need for maintenance and aftercare.

Further increasing its adaptability for cities such as Paris, the CT-1 has been carefully developed to enable shared use. It therefore will come as standard with intelligent sharing, fleet management, usage optimisation and personalisation functions that are accessible via an intuitive digital interface.

Designed to be activated via mobile apps, the CT-1 can be personalised and customised by customers via City Transformers’ own cloud-based sharing and management services, as well as being integrated into an existing fleet management infrastructure.

The CT-1 is scheduled to enter series production in 2024.

#FreeYourCity
City Transformer has kicked off its momentous #FreeYourCity campaign at Mondial de l’Auto.

The movement encourages people to aspire to a new era of mobility freedom – one that doesn’t come with the debilitating constraints that has become the norm of the current transportation network.

City Transformer is offering the CT-1 at Mondial de l’Auto for pre-order by individuals for a limited time and quantity with a fully refundable €150 deposit. This exclusive, limited-run first production series of the CT-1 is priced at just €12,500.
