Demand surges for Electric Vehicle information from Autovia media sites ahead of COP26 climate talks

INTEREST in Electric Vehicles (EVs) has transformed from rapid growth this year into a deluge this month as car buyers devour more information on EVs than the car market has ever known.

Analysts at Autovia, publishers of some of the UK’s biggest automotive media titles,, say the increased appetite of car buyers for information about EVs is unprecedented and may herald a faster transformation of the car market towards electrification than many observers have predicted.

Autovia tracks car buyer intentions across brands ranging from its online used car supermarket BuyaCar.co.uk, through websites such as Auto Express, Carbuyer, evo and DrivingElectric to its own ‘Customer Data Platform’, which helps to connect car buyers with manufacturers and dealers.

Autovia’s revelations come as events such as the upcoming COP26 UN climate change conference in Glasgow, record highs for fuel prices and this week’s expansion of London’s Ultra Low Emissions Zone (Ulez) promise to drive even greater interest in the transformation to zero-tailpipe emissions on Britain’s roads.

Already every measure of interest in EVs detected by Autovia suggests an exponential increase in demand for information, including

A 76.1% rise in the proportion of searches for used EVs on BuyaCar.co.uk compared with October 2020

A 93% increase in page views for EV articles on Auto Express compared with a year before

A 20% increase this week in traffic to BuyaCar’s Ulez-compliant cars advice

8 out of the 10 most popular car reviews on Auto Express this month are on EVs, compared with 3 in October 2020

Carbuyer.com’s guide to the best EVs is the advice site’s most widely read buying guide by a wide margin, beating even popular favourite guides like hot hatches, 4x4s and SUVs

Steve Fowler, Editor-In-Chief at Autovia, said: “The traffic we’re seeing across the Autovia brands to electric vehicle content is remarkable, even in the context of a car market struggling to meet the appetites of car buyers who want more new and used product than the industry can currently supply.

“To put the massive interest in EVs into perspective, the 93% increase in readership for Auto Express content about electric vehicles substantially outstrips even the huge 21% increase in total visits to the site we’ve seen this year.

“Every car purchase begins with research and our data suggests that buyers are not just telling surveys that they’re interested in an EV, but seriously investigating information and advice like never before.

“With the COP26 Climate Change Talks guaranteed to generate major headlines over the coming days and weeks we expect this dramatic growth in appetite for EV information to continue accelerating.”
